16.09 – An emptiness that is worse than loneliness
When we neglect or reject relationships, we make ourselves lonely. But when we neglect or reject our relationship with Krishna, we make ourselves worse that lonely; we make ourselves empty.
Life without Krishna becomes an emotional wasteland, a scorching desert wherein our emotions dry and die under the glare of ultimate meaninglessness.
Emotions bring life to our life. Emotions are what differentiate us conscious beings from non-conscious things. The quality of our emotions determines the quality of our life. When we have no underpinning and unifying connection with Krishna, eventually physical reality becomes the only reality for us.
However, all physical sensations, no matter how stimulating, are fleeting. They offer no lasting fulfillment. In fact, life divorced of spiritual reality, offers nothing lastingly meaningful. One chance at living is all that we have, for with the death of our body, we end. Within the chance of this one and only lifetime, whatever chances we get to enjoy also depend on chance. Life becomes reduced to a lottery in which we find ourselves repeatedly among the losers. We can only hope that tomorrow will bring something better. All the while we dread that tomorrow may instead bring the end, the irreversible extinction of our fragile existence.
We try to get rid of this chilling emptiness by busying ourselves in drugs or spectator sports or TV – or workoholism. But nothing works. These painkillers may temporarily numb our internals, but our existential emptiness keeps gnawing at our core with unrelenting voracity. No wonder the Bhagavad-gita (16.09) states that those who adopt a godless worldview destroy their own souls.
Don’t we want a better life?
Why not let Krishna offer us what we want and need?
A life rich with lasting and fulfilling emotions can be ours if we just connect lovingly with Krishna.
