Which is the best way to read scripture?

Among the 3 ways for reading scriptures – literal, moral / ethical and metaphorical, the literal way, as mentioned in the lecture, is most purifying. Which is considered to be the best? How does one decide which way to use for reading? Kindly elaborate on this. Thank you.
