When atheists read theistic books, why don’t devotees read atheistic books in addition to theistic books? Shouldn’t one understand both points of view?

Recently I came across a very intelligent atheist who asked me why the theists don’t read atheistic literature? He said that though an atheist, he reads Mahabharat (just like he reads any other book) and so on, but why dont the theists read atheistic literature? Shouldnt one hear both point of views?
